Roofing Types

Learn about our 5 Roofing Types:

SLATE

Slate has the best record of performance and longevity compared to other roofing systems. Slate is an organic material.

K2 Slate and Metal Works uses slate quarried exclusively in VT as it is dense, sound rock, exceedingly tough and durable and is known to be of the highest quality. It is practically non-absorptive, absolutely fire and waterproof, resistant to climatic changes, with no disintegration.

Vermont Slate roofs have lasted a century or more, giving a minimum cost per year, in contrast to other types of manufactured roofing which must be re-roofed typically four times within this period. Slate comes in many different sizes and textures, each piece is cut by hand.

K2 Slate and Metal Works can help you create any aesthetically pleasing design you desire. Vermont Slate colors, sizes, and texture afford many architectural effects, contributing to the appearance and beauty of any building.

K2 Slate and Metal Works Design Team can help you create any aesthetically pleasing design you desire. Because Slate naturally resists all of nature’s elements, it is a perfect choice for our Vermont Climate. Slate is a heavy material to use, you must have a reinforced roof structure to support the weight of the slate tiles.

K2 Slate and Metal Works can help you to decide if this is an appropriate product for your roofing project, and/or how to go about reinforcing the roof if necessary.

METAL STANDING SEAM

Metal panels are available in copper, galvalume-a corrosion resistant alloy, galvanized steel with a high performance enamel paint finish. Snow slides off easily, it is durable, energy efficient, virtually maintenance-free, nonflammable, long lasting and recyclable.

WOOD SHAKE & WOOD SHINGLE

Cedar is often used to achieve a cottage or nautical style roof aesthetic. The typical life span of this roofing system is 20-30 years, depending on thickness of shingles and the environment.

Wood shakes are irregular and rough textured whereas wood shingles are cut to a specific size and smooth finished. Both are available in a variety of lengths, widths, and grades of wood. Wood shingles and shakes can be treated for fire resistance and extended life at an additional cost.

COMPOSITION ASPHALT SHINGLES

For roofs with slopes of 4/12 or more, the architectural shingle is the most popular option. The Architectural shingle is heavier than the traditional 3 tab, better for wind resistance, life span and overall aesthetics.

They are designed to resemble wood or slate.

Composition shingles consist of a fiberglass core, coated with mineral aggregate for added color and texture. They are fastened with galvanized roofing nails and an adhesive backing strip that further adheres in warmer temperatures.

Manufacturers start with 30 year warranties and other options with higher price points.

Composition Color Palette brands include:

  • Owens Corning
  • Certain Teed
  • IKO
